Brief Description about the Project:

  • Adolescent period is a transition period with a lot of ongoing emotions and psychological issue that influences their mental wellbeing. Research has shown that the mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies among adolescents are increasing. In India, the adolescent population, aged 10-19 years constituted around 20.9% of the total population. Suicide ranks among the three leading causes of morality among youth. Adolescents face many barriers in obtaining mental health services easily from the existing hospitals. Also, in India, there is scarcity of psychiatrists. Health workers play an important role in providing mental health services in the community using standard diagnostic tools. To address the challenge of mental illness in resource constrained setting, WHO has developed a tool called Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP). Current research tries to train health workers using this for mental health problems among adolescents. This would help in scaling up the health services available to adolescents.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in preparation of study tools (manuals, booklets, posters, questionnaires)
  • Assisting in conducting training for health workers in mental health
  • Participant recruitment
  • Co-ordinating consultations given to adolescents by health workers
  • Co-ordinating referral of adolescents to Manasi Clinic in Mugalur
  • Data collection and monitoring in the field

Key Skills:

  • Good communication skills: Need to be able to speak, communicate information orally, writing and electronically, type clearly as well as understand the assignments instructions given
  • Good managerial skills in terms of co-ordination: Need to support conducting the research, supervision of data collection, helping in the training of research participants, maintaining good professional relationship with all the concerned people
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with all stakeholders, meet regularly with the PI to discuss research assignments, demonstrate respect toward and cooperation with all investigators, manage and respond to project-related emails
  • Good computer skills for data entry, report preparation, typing letters, preparing progress reports for the PI and funding agency
  • Good record maintaining skills: Assist in monitoring research budgets and helping in the maintenance of financial records, maintain accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary

Specific Activities:

  • Assisting in preparation of materials for training health workers, translation of manuals, posters, study questionnaires
  • Taking print outs of posters, manuals, leaflets
  • Taking informed consent and assent from adolescents or their guardians and health workers
  • Maintaining the hard copy of participant file
  • Data gathering by collecting the participant files from health workers
  • Maintaining the list of adolescents diagnosed with priority mental health conditions
  • Taking diagnosed adolescents to Manasi Clinic in Mugalur for consultation
  • Co-ordinating study activities by travelling to Sarjapur PHC, Dommasandra PHC and Mugalur RHTC
  • Any other task given by the PI
