St. John's Medical College is happy to invite you to the Maj. Gen. SL Bhatia Oration on 7th June, 2019.
The oration is a tribute to Maj Gen SL Bhatia, the first Indian Dean of the Grant Medical College, an eminent scholar and the first Professor of the History of Medicine at St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore.
This year's speaker is Dr. Jayanta Bhattacharya, an independent History of Medicine Scholar from the rural Raiganj, West Bengal. His talk will be on "The rise of hospital medicine in India: Its consequences and the inception of public health". The talk will appeal to all interested in Public Health, the History of Medicine, and Colonial History.

About the orator: Dr. Jayanta Bhattacharya is a physician by training and works extensively in the field of history of medicine. Presently, he is doing research on the emergence, consolidation, social ramifications and impact of “hospital medicine” and public health in India. He practices medicine and is involved with public health awareness activities in rural Raiganj. Dr. Jayanta is a Research Associate of Indian National Science Academy and is an author or co-author of history of medicine books and academic articles written in Bengali and English.
