Quality Improvement of Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) Services in Primary Health Centres of Northern Karnataka, India
Details

The goal of the Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) project is to provide technical support to Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) in its efforts to develop effective operational and health system approaches within the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) for the state of Karnataka. The project’s activities are focused on eight underserved districts in northern Karnataka (Koppal, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Bellary, Raichur, Yadgir, Gulbarga and Bidar), where the aim is to improve MNCH service delivery and outcomes. The project is implemented in two phases: assessments during the first year of the project and implementation during the next 4 years. St John’s assisted in carrying out a situational analysis of nearly 2900 government and private birthing facilities across these districts to provide a descriptive epidemiology of infrastructure/equipment/supplies, staffing and health care services in 2010-11. This baseline assessment was used to arrive at a critical package of interventions comprising of clinical mentoring and supportive supervision for primary health centres (PHCs). Sixty nurses recruited from north Karnataka have undergone a 6-week nurse mentoring program at St John’s Research Institute and are now placed in these districts (in a ratio of 1:5 mentors:PHCs) to assist the nurses and other staff in the PHCs to improve quality of maternal and neonatal care.
