The objective of the undergraduate medical education program is the creation of doctors who are not only knowledgeable and skilled but ethical, responsive and accountable to patients and the community. The formal curriculum is ‘the stated, intended and formally endorsed curriculum’ which is taught to students throughout their years of medical training. Another area of learning happens through ‘the set of influences that function at the level of organisational structure and culture’ which is called the hidden curriculum. Through Focused group discussions (around 10 groups of around 6-8 students each, across the 5 years of medical schooling including internship) the existence of the hidden curriculum in the medical training environment, will be explored using a structured FGD guide. Qualitative analysis of the transcribed audio recorded data will arrive at themes and a new understanding of what makes ‘the good doctor’.
