BACKGROUND:
The prevalence of disability in India has been estimated at 1.8 % ; however, factors affecting the employment of persons with disability (PWD) in India have not been examined.
METHODS:
Using nationally representative data from the National Sample Survey Organization, this paper examines factors that affect the impact of disability in terms of employment for persons with disability.
RESULTS:
The extent of disability (represented by the person ’ s ability to perform self care activities) was lower for those from rural areas and of lower socioeconomic status. Disabled men were more likely to be employed than women (p < 0.001), as were rurally resident persons with disability who were likely to be employed than their urban counterparts (p = 0.009). Individuals at a lower level of monthly expenditure (suggesting a lower socio-economic status) were more likely to change or lose work due to disability but were less likely to be unemployed or unable to work due to disability.
CONCLUSIONS:
The data suggests that PWD have variable employment status. The data provide important information for formulating and strengthening targeted strategies to empower them.
