Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an increasingly common and potentially catastrophic complication in hospitalized patients. This preliminary study will help us in exploring the feasibility to undertake a larger cohort study of similar nature to determine the true burden and consequences of AKI in the at-risk pediatric population.
Understanding the epidemiology of AKI more accurately by using standardized definitions and descriptions of existing at-risk and high-risk populations will be the first step to improve outcomes. Knowledge of the risk factors for AKI and mortality will help in initiating preventive and early therapy for AKI.
